6 Tips for Baby Safety Month

September 8, 2021

September is Baby Safety Month and all parents, new or experienced, are concerned about baby safety. As a company founded by parents for parents, Owlet is committed to offer tools and resources to help parents keep their children safe all year long.

To help you brush up on your baby safety knowledge, we’ve put together 6 tips for Baby Safety Month.

  1. Always Practice Safe Sleep

Babies are on a cycle of eating, sleeping & needing their diaper changed. And as exhausted as you may be, it’s important to always remember to follow safe sleep practices. Think ABC:

Alone: put your baby in their crib without any loose blankets, pillows, or stuffed animals.

Back: lay your baby down on their back, either swaddled or unswaddled.

Crib: your baby should always sleep in their own crib or bassinet.

Your baby’s crib should include a firm mattress covered in well-fitting sheets. If you’re concerned about your baby staying warm while they sleep, dress your little one in footie pajamas and use a sleep sack for extra warmth.

  1. Double Check Your Car Seat

Before you can leave the hospital or birth center you must have an infant car seat installed in your car. However, it’s estimated more than half of car seats are installed incorrectly or not used properly. Use Baby Safety Month as a reminder to double or triple-check that your baby’s car seat is installed correctly. 1. Invest in a Baby Monitor

Keeping an eye on your little one is one of the biggest ways to ensure Baby’s safety.

For a proactive approach to baby monitoring, check out the Smart Sock Plus. Monitor your baby’s heart rate, oxygen, and sleep trends from birth to 5 years old. Imagine how helpful all that data will be during those dreaded sleep regressions or seasonal colds. And get a complete picture of your baby’s wellness with the Monitor Duo Plus, which combines the power of the Smart Sock Plus with the Cam to stream HD video to your phone while you monitor your baby.

  1. Plan for Emergencies

Baby safety includes more than just your home environment. Natural disasters like floods, wildfires, and tornados, impact thousands of families every year, and planning ahead can save time, stress, and help keep your whole family safe:

  • Create a list of emergency contacts
  • Plan how to evaluate your home or neighborhood
  • Pack an emergency bag of supplies
  1. Install Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Alarms

An often overlooked but critical part of baby safety is smoke alarms. All homes and apartments should have functioning smoke and carbon monoxide alarms on every floor and one near heat sources like the kitchen and furnace. Many alarms are sold as a combo to save space, and the batteries should be checked every 6 months.

  1. Secure Loose Cords

Electrical plugs and the long cords from blinds pose a very serious strangulation risk to babies and young children. Wrap up and secure the extra cord length from lamps or monitors and never put your baby’s crib or bassinet near unsecured cords. For a totally secure monitoring experience, the Owlet Cam can’t be beat. The Cam comes with a safe wall mounting kit to keep dangerous cords away from little hands and can be mounted over your baby’s crib without worry. The Cam also streams over a secure Wi-Fi connection so only those you choose can stream video.

Baby Safety Month is a great chance for parents and caregivers to refresh themselves on the standard baby safety practices listed above and research any updates or developments. It takes a village to raise a child and Owlet is proud to be a partner to families everywhere.
