Falling in Love with Your Pregnant Body

Pregnancy is an interesting experience. While it’s nothing short of a miracle, it can create drastic changes in the body. Plus, your hormones are fluctuating to account for your growing baby’s needs. So, falling in love with your pregnant body isn’t always easy. Luckily, we’re here to help.

Here are five effective ways to fall in love with your pregnant body:

1. Acknowledge the miracle.

Seriously, the things our bodies are capable of during pregnancy are miraculous. The way our organs shift to accommodate a growing baby (or babies), the way our body adjusts to the extra weight, the way our skin is able to stretch, etc. are all pretty amazing. Also, the fact that your body is able to carry a child in the first place is pretty unique and is not something that every woman will be able to experience. So take a moment to acknowledge how wonderful it is that your body is able to do this incredibly difficult thing. And notice all of those little miracles that happen as your pregnancy progresses.

2. Take care of yourself.

Don’t forget to engage in self-care. Whether it’s mild exercise, a pedicure or prenatal massage, or just investing in products that will help your skin feel moisturized as it stretches, find something you enjoy that helps you feel better about yourself.

3. Don’t compare yourself to others.

All pregnancies are unique, and it’s easy to compare yourself to others, whether they’re pregnant or not. Just, don’t. Rather than combing social media for examples of the “perfect” pregnancy, or comparing weight gain with pregnant friends, try remembering that every pregnancy is different. It’s not healthy or constructive to try to fit into some unattainable “ideal” version of pregnancy; just let your pregnancy progress and try to embrace every stage. After all, this experience is only for a season.

4. Dress the part.

Take this opportunity to buy clothing that fits your body the way it is now, and not try to fit into clothing that suited you pre-pregnancy. In other words, maternity clothing is your friend. While some of your pre-pregnancy clothes might work for the first little while, it’s important to properly dress that bump. Here are some fun fall maternity style tips to help get the ball rolling.

5. Focus on positives of the present.

Rather than obsessing over getting your “pre-baby body” back, try focusing on the positives of the present. Your body is growing another human, and it’s not constructive to fixate on your pre-pregnancy weight every time the scale ticks up. Try to release the anxiety and fear of what will happen after you have your baby, and relish in your body’s ability to carry her. Take things one day at a time, enjoying your pregnancy journey, and try not to worry about the before or the after.
