How to Safely Use a Wearable Blanket on Your Baby

October 25, 2021

Among all the baby gear inventions over the past 20 years, the wearable blanket is perhaps the most simple and useful. A baby wearable blanket is a safe, easy way to keep your baby warm and cozy at night while following safe sleep practices.

What is a wearable blanket?

A baby wearable blanket is just what it sounds like: a cozy fabric sack for your baby to sleep in. Think of a wearable blanket as a miniature sleeping bag for your baby, but one that they wear zipped safely and comfortably over their body during naps and nighttime sleep. Most wearable blanket are made of lightweight, breathable fabric and have arm holes so it stays in place while your baby moves during sleep.

Why use a baby wearable blanket?

To align with the American Academy of Pediatrics’ (AAP) safe sleep practices, blankets should not be used in your baby’s crib before the age of 1. Instead, to keep your baby warm and cozy at night you can use a wearable blanket. The new Owlet Sleeper is made from a buttery-soft bamboo rayon and zips from the bottom up for easy diaper changes while your baby sleeps.

Baby wearable blanket safety

A wearable blanket replaces the need for blankets that can pose an accidental suffocation risk for infants. Dress your baby in weather-appropriate pajamas and then zip them up in their wearable blanket before putting them down on their back for sleep. Keeping your baby’s sleep environment at a safe and comfortable temperature, between 68 and 72 degrees Fahrenheit, prompts better sleep. Besides eliminating the risk of suffocation, a wearable blanket can also help with sleep learning as it allows your baby to stay warm and comfortable while they work on self-soothing.

Consider investing in multiple wearable blankets so you always have a clean one ready for sleep and can choose the fabric based on the weather. Happy sleeping!
