Hi, y’all! I’m Lindsey Olson, The Momma Whisperer. I have two littles – Parker who is 5 and Eliza who is almost 9 months. I’m a mommy, a wife, an attorney (please don’t hate me), a baker, and a DIY wannabe. I’m an online shopping addict (not yet in recovery) and love researching and learning about all things baby. Our lives are the expected crazy whirlwind that comes with two working parents and a love for travel and adventure. If we aren’t headed out to west Texas to visit family, we are probably plane-hopping to check out a new part of the country – always with the babes in tow.
It’s not often that I’m going to mark a piece of baby gear as can’t-live-without-it, but, guys, the Owlet is up there in my top 5 must-haves for parents. Most baby gear is aimed at making your life easier, but the Owlet sleep monitor is more than that. It allows me to get some much needed sleep at night. It’s not helicopter-parenting, and it’s not being overprotective. It’s safeguarding against my worst nightmare, and it’s peace-of-mind you really can’t get elsewhere.
I wouldn’t say that I’m an over-worrier with my kids. I’m all about letting my spawn learn their limits and figure things out on their own (within reason). BUT, the fear of accidental suffocation darn near terrifies me. Ok, it does terrify me. Add in a baby who refuses to sleep on her back and occasionally will only sleep snuggled in bed with me (earning her the nickname “Velcro”), and this momma was going days (ok, months) without sleeping more than a few restless hours a night. Enter the Owlet…
I cannot say enough how amazing it is to sleep actual sleep knowing that the Owlet has my back. I set the safest sleep environment for baby girl that I can and then rest SO much easier.
With our first, we were deep in the parenting underbelly that’s marked by an absolute lack of sleep (as evidenced by my inability to correctly use non-babble words in coherent sentences and the ever-present gallon of coffee in my hand), because the thought that we were wholly responsible for the life of our first little squish was overwhelming at times. I never really let myself go all the way to sleep, because “what if…” I was in law school at the time, and a classmate (and more seasoned parent) suggested an under-the-mattress sleep monitor. At the time there weren’t options on the market, so we gleefully made our sleep monitor part of our parenting universe.
With Eliza, there wasn’t even a question about whether we’d get a sleep monitor for her. By default, we started with the same monitor we had with Parker but were introduced to the Owlet a few months ago.
We haven’t had heart-dropping false alarms like we did with the under-the-mattress sleep monitor, I’m able to effortlessly travel with the Owlet, and, regardless of where we are or what our sleep circumstances are, I have one more layer of protection around my little one.
It’s also worth noting that Owlet has fantastic customer care, too. There’s even an option to chat with a customer service rep right in the Owlet app. I’ve used it at 2 am before to ask how to dim the base light, and the rep I chatted with was easy to communicate with and very quick to answer my question (you hold the top of the base down, btw).
