Having a baby changes things socially, but don’t let that stop you from getting out and enjoying life! Embrace the changes and learn how to adapt to maintain your social life after baby. Here are some tips to help make going out easier:
Get a good stroller
A double-jogging stroller changed my life after kids. I could easily get around the park, the mall, the zoo, even the beach without carrying a baby, baby bag, my purse, etc. They can get spendy but you can find good deals on Craigslist, Facebook yard sale sites, or better yet, put it on your baby registry for your baby shower! You won’t regret this, it’s a must-have.
Plan outings around nap-time
Babies thrive from consistency and routine, so a mid-day nap can sometimes throw a damper in last-minute plans. Fortunately, babies are notorious for their ability to sleep anywhere, so try to plan activities like mall browsing or even a movie around nap-time. I successfully saw many movies while my first baby nursed or slept peacefully through the show. While not all babies can sleep this soundly, it’s worth a shot!
Invest in friendships with other parents
Other parents will understand if you’re running late, need to leave early, have a leaky nipple or need to chug coffee before having a conversation. Sometimes simply having someone to commiserate with makes tough situations, like sleepless nights with a colicky baby, a little bit easier to bear. We’re all in this together, so find and cultivate a tribe of like-minded parents to make socializing easier.
Make date night a regularly-scheduled event
Many couples have lamented, and subsequently, articles and books have been written about falling out of sync with your spouse once a baby starts third-wheeling. It takes time to get into a new groove, but don’t lose sight of the importance of continuing to date each other. Spend time finding a trustworthy babysitter and do what you have to do to get out together once a week, if possible, or as often as you can. Strengthening and fortifying your marriage is worth the sacrifice of time, money, and effort that date night involves.
Find a gym with a daycare you like
It wasn’t until my oldest was 3 that I found a daycare that we both loved, and then it became so much easier (and I lost my best excuse) to get to the gym regularly. How I wish I would’ve spent time looking for a good gym with a daycare sooner! The childcare workers are amazing and interact with each child, and accept babies as young as 6 weeks old. They get quality care, and I feel better after I get a good sweaty workout in (as well as an episode of Grey’s Anatomy while on the treadmill). It’s a win-win.
