Summer Pregnancy Survival Guide

Summer is here, and it is already a scorcher. 100+ degree temps can be miserable under the best of circumstances but can feel even worse when you’re pregnant. And the most important thing is that you and baby are as comfortable as possible. Since we’ve already provided five ways to beat the heat, we’re incorporating those tips into a more comprehensive summer pregnancy survival guide.
Here’s a list of tips on how to keep it cool during the summer months:
- Stay hydrated by drinking lots of water. You can also up your hydration game by making a delicious smoothie or a mocktail.
- Use sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 and wear breathable, light-colored clothing when you’re out in the sun. Umbrellas and fancy sun hats are also great ideas.
- Try doing outdoor tasks in the morning or the evening when it’s cooler outside.
- Carry a spray bottle around with you everywhere. Or use wet washcloths when you’re inside.
- Keep your skin moisturized with lotion, and soothe your skin by taking an oatmeal bath.
- Refresh with brief showers throughout the day to keep you cool.
- Stay inside if the outside temperature exceeds 90 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Whenever possible, take time to nap or to rest/relax.
- To avoid excess swelling, try to keep your feet elevated as much as possible. Bonus points if you’re reclining in a super comfy chair with an ice cold drink in your hand.
- To avoid dehydration, reduce your sodium intake. Try to limit soda intake as well for the same reason.
- Take your rings off at the first sign of swelling. Hands tend to be one of the first body parts to swell when you’re pregnant, so taking off your rings ensures you won’t have to cut them off later.
- Be aware of potential foodborne illness present in barbecue foods like potato salad, coleslaw, and deviled eggs.
- Get some comfy shoes with amazing arch support that fit correctly for where your feet are at now, not prior to your pregnancy.
- Go swimming! Preferably in a pool that gives you a little bit of shade, and in a water temperature that helps keep you cool.
