What You Need to Know About the Newborn Sock

May 16, 2016

By now you probably know that Owlet comes with four different sizes of fabric socks to grow along with your little bundle. But, did you know that two of those socks are designed specifically for newborns? The newborn socks are easy to identify and use. So, without further ado: the top three things you need to know about the newborn sock.

1. Alternate Feet

If you’re really attentive, you may have noticed us referring to four “socks” up above. Yep, not one but *two* newborn socks come in the Owlet box. Because newborn baby skin can be extra sensitive, we suggest that you switch the foot that Owlet is on every 4-24 hours. Switching it up will help prevent irritation that newborn skin is especially prone to.

2. “Peek-a-Boo” Toes

Pull out all the socks from the box and you’ll notice one thing off the bat: two of the socks don’t look like socks at all. The newborn socks are designed without a toe-cap, and your baby’s toes will be mostly visible when the sock is on. Velcro straps on the heel and bottom of the foot keep the sock on nice and snug. Of course, you can put everyday socks over the top of Owlet if you want to keep those toesies extra warm at night!

3. Bottom of the Foot

The newborn sock is designed to fit with the Sock Electronics band resting on the outside of the foot. The easiest way to make sure that happens is to place the Owlet logo from the electronics on the bottom of your baby’s foot. Think about the velcro strap from the sock like a little shoe. It curves around from the inside of the foot to the outside, across the top.

Just remember that when you graduate to the next sock size, the white owl face on the sock sensor goes on the top. We think it’s helpful to think of starting at the bottom, and working your way up!

Hey Sandra, the Smart Sock was designed to be used when your baby is sleeping in his or her own sleep space like a crib or bassinet but please note that it’s not intended to be used 24/7.

Hello, I would like to know if my newborn can use the sock all day. I read to only use it while sleeping. My newborn sleeps mostly all day so I was wondering if its ok?

Thanks for reaching out to us, Lalitha. We recommend using the Smart Sock when your little one is sleeping. We’d like to have a team member reach out to you so we can assist you and answer any questions you have. Make sure to keep an eye on your email!

Is it safe for my 2-week old to wear the sock all day as well as during the night? Because we’ve been doing that since we got the sock a few days ago and when we take it off for bath time his foot has marks and indentations from the sock. I’m just wondering if this is bad for his skin or foot development if we have the sock on all the time. Is it designed for just night sleeps? Should we not have it on all day? We take it off just to charge the sock.

Hi Haley, the Smart Sock 2 can be used with a swaddle, footie pajamas, or even a regular sock over the top without a problem. However, it was not meant to be used in a bed-sharing situation as your body could interfere with the signal.

I bed share with my 2 month old son for his comfort and night nursing, and I put the blanket at about waist level in him and rib level for me. Can the blanket interfere with the owlet sock?

Can you put a regular sock on over the owlet monitor to keep baby’s foot warm?

Hi Autumn! The smallest sock size that comes with the Owlet was designed for infants 6-8 lbs- so he’s almost there! In the meantime, try putting a regular sock over the top to help keep it in place. We hope that helps!

My baby was born early and only weighs just over five pounds. The newborn sock is too big for his foot so it will not give us readings. Is there a smaller sock or something we can do to use the sock and get a reading in the mean time?!
Thank you!

Hi Jen! The Owlet does not currently have this feature but we can pass along your interest to our development team!

I’ve had several red alerts this week for either low oxygen or low heart rate. Is there any way to see what they actually dropped to? once the alarm goes off I can’t see the readings Thank you

Hi Julia, you can actually use Owlet without WiFi. The Base Station operates independently of your smart phone. Owlet is designed to send you notifications via the Base Station, regardless of Wi-Fi connection.

We have had the red alarm go off 3 times in a week old baby saying low oxygen(88 )and my daughter is a nurse she immediately checked and 2as false reading then this morning it said high heart rate 277 which it definitely wasn’t. Why is it doing this?

So this product uses Wi-Fi not Bluetooth right? I don’t have internet at my home, I only use the internet through my iPhone, I can Bluetooth my phone to devices but if it requires Wi-Fi then I unfortunately can’t use this product:(

Hi Tarra, the Owlet comes with three sock sizes to grow with your little one up to 18 months! As far as the alarms, the Base Station is designed to alert you with sound AND lights. Owlet is also designed to send alerts to your smartphone as well. Let us know if you have any more questions!

1. Do all the socks come with my order.

2. Does an actual alarm go off? It’s not just the light going from green to red is it, because if I’m alseep that doesn’t help.

Hi Cindy, Owlet monitors baby’s heart rate and oxygen level and is designed to alert you if your baby stops breathing. The Owlet Smart Sock uses hospital technology (pulse oximetry) to gather baby’s heart rate and oxygen levels and uses Bluetooth to send your baby’s information to the Base Station. Then the Base Station uses Wi-Fi to send your baby’s live vitals to your smartphone. And yes the Owlet Smart Sock is wireless!

What is the monitor?? Obviously it looks to be without wires..is it blue tooth…
